Humans first settled the Island of Laylu over 200 years ago, the first inhabitants those of a shipwreck, the survivors never rescued. They did well enough, building structures making it through one tropical storm after another. These original humans learned of the Merfolk and the two species lived peacefully, helping each other and navigating a relationship unlike another anywhere else in the world. The human offspring would be discovered some 75 years later, by an American Coast Guard vessel. It didn't take long for there to be development on the Island and it quickly became a tourist spot. The Merfolk became more elusive as the onland population continued to grow. Fishing became a huge export of the island, ships coming from all over to catch the rare fish that could be found here. That was before fishermen started disappearing. Rumors that it was the Merfolk who were responsible began to catch and quickly spread like wild fire. A war has been raging on ever since - it's been bloody and it's been hard on both sides. There are the few who are searching for peace. What side will you be on?
